This trailblazer is ready for the woods. introductionthe trailblazer is well named, giving the suggestion that this chevrolet blazer is going boldly where no blazer has gone before. Indeed, with a retail price of $32,670, the trailblazer has scaled new heights for chevy compact trucks. Yet despite being packed with amenities, the blazer loses none of its off-road capabilities. walkaroundthe trailblazer is an upscale chevy blazer. Either way, the trailblazer gets a monotone exterior and special badging. The bumpers and front fascia, body side moldings, and outside rearview mirror are all body color, and trailblazers get special gold-accented aluminum wheels. Otherwise, the trailblazer looks like other 4-door blazers. like all the other blazer-class gm suvs, a 4. 3-liter vortec v6 powers the trailblazer. The 90-degree v6 uses a cast iron block and head and overhead valves, and runs happily on 87 octane. Although the redline is 5600 rpm, the power peak of 190 horsepower comes at 4400 rpm. And, with a very useful 250 foot-pounds of torque at 2800 rpm, there's limited need to rev the engine to the redline. As with the push button-controlled insta-trac standard on all 4x4 blazers, the trailblazer driver can shift between 2wd and 4wd high on the fly. The 4wd low mode can be used by stopping and shifting the transfer case. Autotrac adds an auto 4wd button. In this mode, the transfer case remains in 2wd until wheel slip is detected. The transmission shifts automatically into 4wd until prop shaft speeds are equalized, and then returns to 2wd. If multiple 'slip events' are detected, the transfer case remains in 4wd for a longer time. Autotrac also has a transfer case neutral for towing behind a recreational vehicle. like all blazers, the trailblazer uses a short-/long-arm front suspension; 4x4 models are sprung by torsion bars. At the rear, the trailblazer has a live rear axle with variable-rate multi-leaf springs. Using firm de carbon shock absorbers and stiffer spring rates, the z85 package has a more controlled ride. interiorinside, the trailblazer features special two-tone leather trim seats with logos embroidered on the headrests and the trailblazer name embroidered on the door panels. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is also standard with a new small hub thanks to a redesigned airbag. The trailblazer also gets special floor mats and a console-mounted transmission shifter. the front seats are broad with limited bolstering. They are more like comfortable chairs than bucket seats. A bulge in the front passenger's footwell accommodates the blazer's exhaust. The rear bench is low but will be comfortable for two adults, though three will fit. The rear seatback splits and folds 60-40 for cargo flexibility. as the top-of-the-line 4-door model, the trailblazer also includes all the standard features on the lt trim level, including the electronic climate control, a thermostat control that really works. Tilt wheel and speed control, power windows, locks and mirrors are also included. Though not as radical as larger 4x4 rides, the trailblazer has a higher seating height than the typical sedan. The payback is that commanding view of the road that suv owners cherish. the trailblazer comes with full instrumentation that is well laid out; it shares its instrument panel with the other blazer-class trucks. General motors has made major strides in its minor controls, and the dash of the trailblazer is an excellent example. That smoothes as revs increase, and in the operating range between 2000 and 3000 rpm the vortec is a friendly companion. Full throttle causes the v6 to accelerate with a healthy growl that gets louder as revs rise. Some may not appreciate the additional road feel. But the reward is an easily discernable improvement in responsiveness, a reduction in float and, thanks to greater roll resistance, less lean in the corners. The result is an overall greater feel of control and confidence at a minor cost of slightly bumpier ride. I preferred the crisper responses of the firmer suspension on winding mountain roads. the auto 4wd mode can be used at all times. It keeps the transmission in two-wheel drive until slip occurs, so there's no fuel mileage penalty. The v6 operates in the low 2000-rpm range at highway speeds and, except for a subtle bass line from the engine and a steady road rumble up through the suspension, the ride is quiet enough for easy conversation between front and rear passengers. The tires selected by chevrolet are free of whine and aren't so heavy as to overwhelm the suspension. A slight whisper of wind noise around the a-pillars is the only other distraction. The ride, though firm, is not at all harsh or jiggly. Not all sport utilities are this civilized over the road, and we wouldn't hesitate to drive a high-mile day in the trailblazer. loading for a big trip would be easy. Access to the commodious cargo compartment is via a rear liftgate. It will do everything a car will do, and almost as well. Plus it adds almost unstoppable mobility in the worst weather and the capability to go where the roads don't. 2005 chevrolet equinox review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. introductionwith the 2005 chevrolet equinox, general motors finally has a compact suv to challenge the ford escape, honda cr-v and toyota rav4. It's bigger inside and out than most of the suvs in this class, and that's deliberate. Like the honda, toyota and ford products, the equinox is car-based, using the new gm theta front-wheel-drive architecture and adapting it for all-wheel-drive versions. This same architecture is under the saturn vue suv as well. the equinox's dimensions blur the line between compact and midsize suvs. It is 13. 9 inches longer than the arch-competitor and market leader ford escape, and only three inches shorter than a trailblazer, and that extra room will make all the difference on some families' buying decisions. It rides on a wheelbase that is 9. 4 inches longer than the escape's, yielding a generally smoother ride. When the rear bench and front passenger seat are folded flat, there's room inside this truck for eight-foot-long loads. The rear seatback is split 60/40 for added cargo/people hauling flexibility. lineuponly two equinox models are available, including the basic ls 20,995 fwd, $22,970 awd) and the more luxurious and better-appointed lt 22,710 fwd, $24,335 awd) versions. The 1se package 3475) for the lt adds to that onstar, leather seats, power sunroof, premium sound system with seven speakers, the six-cd changer, heated front seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, and redundant radio controls on the wheel. Aside from the packages, the equipment is offered as 18 different freestanding options including two colors of metallic paint, with most options available on either the ls or the lt. But its side-view shape is quite a bit different from the rest of the family, and for that, we like it. the pillars and the sheetmetal between the tops of the glass panels and the roof seem to us to be extra-thick, imparting a feeling of extra solidity and strength, perhaps important for a truck made on a car platform. The bigger size is evident everywhere. Up front, equinox carries flexible net storage pockets on both sides of the console. The center armrest has dual cupholders, a small storage cubby and a coin holder for toll money. Under the armrest is more storage, an open floor console with cupholder, cd holder and purse or briefcase storage. the rear seat sits on a track that allows it to slide back and forth by up to eight inches, to bring kids, brief cases, purses or cargoes closer or to provide extra room for tall passengers in the second seat. Gm calls this innovative feature the multi-flex rear seat. There is a 12-volt power outlet and dual slide-out cupholders for rear passengers. gm's designers have used the space above the wheel wells to create a unique cargo storage system like the adjustable shelf in its larger suvs. A lightweight reversible panel slides into slots on the equinox's wheel wells at three different heights. Carpeted on one side and plastic on the other, the panel can serve as shelf, cargo cover or even a picnic or tailgating table. The tops of the wheel wells contain storage bins for small items. It starts, it runs, and it's relatively smooth. The new five-speed automatic transmission shifts up and down just fine. As we said, this is a 25-year-old engine design that is without benefit of balance shafts, variable-valve timing or variable intake, but it's perfectly adequate for family suv use. Chevrolet rates it to haul families plus trailer loads of up to 3500 pounds, and it has the guts to do it. we found the long-wheelbase chassis of this 3600-pound car/truck provided a plush ride, good cornering performance, relatively crisp handling, and long-trip comfort. The brakes are well matched to the size and weight of the equinox fwd that we tested, with good, progressive pedal travel and linear braking force application. equinox and the saturn vue have an electric power steering system. An electronic control unit programmed for a variety of performance characteristics controls an electric motor mounted adjacent to the steering column to provide the right amount of assist for a given driving situation. The steering ratio is variable, so the equinox has good, steady road feel in highway driving and low effort at low speeds for easier parking. We don't think the average american driver can tell it apart from hydraulic power steering, and that's a good thing, especially when combined with the fact that engine power isn't used to drive the system and can be used to move the vehicle, saving gasoline. summarywith its unique look and larger size than the american and asian competition, the equinox is in a position to please the more demanding customers looking for more power and more space than the norm in this segment. The equinox has a very flexible interior design with lots of space for family goods, and lots of space for american-sized people in both rows of seats. equinox is a chevrolet, with chevrolet-level quality and materials at a chevrolet price. It has a distinctly japanese feel to it, inside and out, but it's american, built in canada, and a heck of a deal for the money, we think. Improved safety features for a superb family vehicle. introductionchevrolet trailblazer is powerful, rugged and capable, yet smooth, comfortable and civilized. Its rigid chassis, sophisticated suspension, powerful brakes and impressive details place it among the best of the mid-size suvs. It's stable and manuverable, and provides a smooth ride. Trailblazer comes standard with a superbly smooth and modern inline six-cylinder engine. an extended-wheelbase model called the trailblazer ext adds three-row seating, accomodating up to seven people. It comes standard with the same excellent six-cylinder engine, but a new v8 is also available. new for 2005, the vortec 5300 v8 with its displacement on demand technology promises about 8 percent better fuel economy than the engine it replaces. Equipped with the v8, a 2wd trailblazer ext can tow up to 7,000 pounds. The ext needs the v8 due to its heavier weight, and because of its much greater length, the ext lacks the handling and stability that make the standard trailblazer such a great family vehicle. curtain side-impact airbags with a rollover sensing system designed to provide increased head protection are available on 2005 models. Also new is an occupant-sensing system for the front passenger-side airbag. There are also improved seats, refinements to the navigation system and more bright trim for the interior. lineuptrailblazer comes in two trim levels, ls and lt. An optional package 1,185) adds remote keyless entry, content-theft alarm, heated foldaway mirrors, a rear window defogger, color-keyed carpeted floor mats, crossbars for the luggage rack, and charcoal-colored body-side moldings. lt 30,370) adds fog lamps, an overhead console with homelink transmitter and travelnote digital recorder, body-color grille and door handles, eight-way power for the driver's seat, a trailer wiring harness and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Various axle ratios (3. 42, 3. 73, and 4. 10:1) and a locking differential are also avialable. walkaroundtrailblazer's styling helped blaze the trail for the latest chevy truck design. It's an aggressive look with bold headlamps and a split grille. The horizontal bar that splits the grille, headlamps and turn signals is chromed on the ls, body-colored on the lt. The front bumper features a large opening with two vertical slats, and the optional foglights are mounted down low. The front end of the trailblazer makes it look like a scaled-down suburban or silverado. overall, trailblazer looks sturdy and neat, with confident lines that express utility. The pillars and window lines are graceful, while the big fender flares are visually bold. At the rear is a convenient step in the center of the bumper. But the stacked round taillights look lumpy and googly-eyed. the track (the distance between the left and right tires) is the widest in the class, 2. 2 inches wider than the ford explorer in front and nearly an inch wider in the rear. This gives the trailblazer more hip and shoulder room. the easiest way to tell the trailblazer from the trailblazer ext is to look at the rear passenger doors; they're full-size doors on the ext but the rear wheel wells cut into them on the standard-length model. The seven-seat trailblazer ext is 16 inches longer in wheelbase than the standard five-seat trailblazer and looks disproportianately long and narrow. interiorthe trailblazer's seats have been revised for improved comfort for 2005. Seat adjustments are manual in the ls. Eight-way power operation with memory and seat heaters is available on fully optioned lt models. Power adjustable pedals on the lt 150) allow shorter drivers to move the brake and accelerator pedals up to three inches closer for better positioning and comfort without having to move to close to the airbag-equipped steering wheel. It's a good safety feature and popular among women. the standard trailblazer seats five passengers, while the trailblazer ext seats seven. Second-row space is nearly identical between trailblazer and trailblazer ext. Both offer more room in the second row than the ford explorer, particularly hip room. cargo space in the ext is generous. The cargo floor isn't as flat as we'd like, though, and a gap between the two third-row seats makes it less dog-friendly. the explorer, however, provides a bit more third-row people room than the trailblazer ext. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 38. 9, 45. 4, and 34. 9 inches, respectively. The corresponding numbers for the trailblazer ext are 38. 1, 49. 2, and 31. 2. Trailblazer ext is 2. 6 inches wider than explorer, which accounts for the additional hip room. But clearly, the explorer's independent rear suspension, and resulting low floor, allowed ford to pack more leg room and head room into a significantly shorter wheelbase. all trailblazers feature complete and clean instrumentation. A big tachometer is on the left, speedometer in center, and on the right are smaller gauges for water, battery, gas and oil. Heating and air conditioning can be controlled separately by the driver and front-seat passenger. Ext models add separate climate controls for rear-seat passengers as well. Interior lights abound, including reading lights. the center console includes an open storage bin, an enclosed compartment and two cup holders forward of the gear lever plus two cup holders for the rear passengers. There are pockets in the front doors and behind the front seats, though none in the rear doors. Behind the rear seat is a small hidden compartment under the floor, while optional features include a cargo net, scrolling tonneau cover and power outlet. An overhead console on the lt includes a sunglasses holder plus travelnote digital recorder. head-curtain side-impact airbags 495) unfold from the roof rail between the a-pillar and side window header. When the bag deploys in a moderate-to-severe side impact, it is angled somewhat toward the window to help provide protection for front and rear-seat outboard passengers. The new system replaces the previous seat-mounted system, which protected the driver and front-seat passenger only. Trailblazers equipped with head-curtain airbags also feature a new rollover sensing system that triggers both the side-curtain airbags and safety belt pretensioners. The rollover-sensing module uses a complex algorithm based on lateral and vertical accelerations, roll rate and vehicle speed to determine whether to deploy the safety systems. Standard on the 2005 trailblazer is gm's passenger sensing system (pss), which can deactivate the front-passenger airbag if it senses an unoccupied front passenger seat or the presence of a smaller occupant. A status indicator on the instrument panel alerts occupants that the passenger airbag is on or off. Even with this system, however, we strongly recommend carrying under-age passengers in an appropriate child seat placed in the second. driving impressiontrailblazer's six-cylinder engine is smooth and quiet. And the faster it goes, the smoother it seems to get. It's an inline-6, a design that's inherently better balanced than a v6. It idles so smoothly that a device was added that prevents the starter from grinding if the key is turned when the engine is already running. called the vortec 4200, the 4. 2-liter.

The first choice in size extra large. introductionsince the chevrolet suburban first appeared in the mid-1930s, its mission has not wavered. It remains the first choice for anyone who needs to haul six or more people plus their cargo. It's based on a superbly engineered full-size truck frame. Its v8 engines deliver strong torque for towing heavy loads and it's supremely stable when pulling heavy trailers through nasty, windy weather. Suburban provides a stable, comfortable ride for long-distance travel. Last but not least, it's fully capable of slogging down muddy two-tracks, whether in pursuit of the great outdoors or to get some work done. the suburban received a substantial update for 2003, with more than 40 major changes designed to enhance safety and improve reliability. The stabilitrak electronic stability program became available for improved control on slippery surfaces. New airbag systems were designed to better protect children and adults of various sizes. Adjustable pedals became available for the comfort and safety for drivers of smaller stature. The brakes were refined, and an all-new electrical architecture promised improved reliability. Xm satellite radio became available, along with a new panasonic dvd system for back-seat monkeys. changes for 2004 enhance safety further. New hydroboost brakes provide power assist even if the engine stalls or is turned off. A tire-pressure monitor is now standard. New options include stand-alone traction control and 17-inch all-weather tires. Most people find the 1500 models meet their needs. suburban 1500 models come equipped with a 5. 3-liter v8. The 2500 models are available with a choice of 6. 0-liter or 8. 1-liter v8s. two trim levels are available: ls 37,050) and ls 4wd 39,850), and lt 41,920) and lt 4wd 44,720). ls models come standard with three-zone manual air conditioning, a 40/20/40 split bench front seat with six-way power for the driver, 60/40 split folding middle bench seat, fog lamps, assist steps, powered and heated outside mirrors, and a rear window defogger. Xm satellite radio (standard on lt, $325 on ls, plus a subscription fee) receives 100 coast-to-coast channels, many of them commercial-free. An electric tilt-and-slide sunroof is available ls and lt 995-$1290). walkaroundthere's no mistaking the 'burb. The chevrolet suburban looks like an old friend. It hasn't been completely redesigned since 2000, and the 2004 model retains a family resemblance to suburbans far older than that. two tailgate configurations are available. The one-piece rear hatch 250) works best for most families. It's lightweight and can be opened with one hand. It comes with a window wiper/washer, and the one-piece window affords the driver a good view rearward. Traditional side-by-side cargo doors are also available. Cargo doors are useful when pulling trailers because they will usually clear the trailer tongue jack. They can also make it easier to control a dog while opening them. In this latest version of the suburban, the hinges are engineered to let the doors open wide without having to be manually disconnected. a puddle lamp mounted below the lt's side mirrors shines down to light up the perimeter. It can be turned on using the keyless remote. That's a nice feature when approaching the suburban in a dark parking garage, as it illuminates underneath the vehicle. In most respects, it is identical to the more luxurious gmc yukon xl, which was called suburban until recent years. interiorcleverly designed seating maximizes the hauling potential of the chevrolet suburban. The third-row seatback folds down without having to remove the headrests, then the whole thing flips forward to substantially increase cargo capacity. A short prop rod locks it into place. The one-piece seat can be removed and is mounted on wheels, but it weighs 75 pounds, so removing it is a lot easier with a second person to help. We've done it.) loading cargo is easy because there's plenty of space for it. The lt's leather seats seem more supportive, but there's still room for improvement. Big and cushy, they are similar to the seats found in all of gm's full-size pickups and suvs. the second row is quite comfortable. Headphone jacks (standard on lt, optional on ls) allow rear-seat passengers to listen to cds while those up front turn on the radio. Running boards make it easier for others. The suburban's step-in height is lower than it was with pre-2000 models, because of the fully boxed frame. power-adjustable pedals allow shorter drivers to sit farther back from the steering wheel and farther away from the airbag, reducing the chance of injury should it deploy. Dual-level airbags, an important new feature introduced last year, inflate with less force in less forceful collisions. Sensors in the front passenger seat and seat belts measure the size and weight of the front-seat passenger and disable the airbag for child-size passengers. driving impressionride quality in the chevy suburban 1500 is smooth, greatly improved over the previous-generation (pre-2000) models. The standard premium smooth ride suspension features a hydraulically controlled rear self-leveling system to keep the suburban at a normal ride height even when carrying heavy loads. Whether towing a horse trailer or picking up a soccer team, autoride continually adjusts the suspension for optimum ride and handling. This technology also helps reduce dive when braking (so that the nose of the vehicle doesn't dip down unduly), and body roll (or lean) during cornering, both of which improve stability. handling is excellent for a big, heavy truck. The steering is responsive and doesn't isolate the driver from the road. The suburban grips the road surprisingly well for such a large vehicle. We never lost traction while pushing hard over wet mountain roads. We drove into wet turns as quickly as we'd ever want to go in a big suv and never lost grip. Part of this is due to the superbly engineered chassis. The entire front part of the frame is hydroformed from one piece of metal, a design that's much more rigid than a bunch of pieces of frame welded together. brakes on all suburbans work smoothly and progressively, providing stopping power without drama. The suburban's braking system was completely redesigned for model-year 2000 and further refined for 2003 for better performance, improved pedal feel and quieter operation. A dynamic rear proportioning system continuously balances the front and rear brakes for maximum braking without activating the abs. Once it does activate, the abs allows the driver to maintain control of the steering in an emergency braking maneuver. Hydroboost braking, introduced for 2004, uses power-steering fluid pressure instead of engine vacuum to reduce braking effort. That provides added safety, with more reserve power assist for braking under specific conditions. Stabilitrak measures where the driver is steering against where the truck is actually heading and, when necessary, reduces engine torque or selectively applies.
